Logic analyzer is a piece of equipment most embedded companies should have.It is a morethan recommended that embedded newbies try to get a hands on with the logic analyzer debugging.
But the how to select among the so many features and expensive models. Thankfully there are low cost USB varients that gets the job done pretty neatly .
One such analyser i came across is LA1034 LOGICPORT LOGIC ANALYZER made by INTRONICS.The unit is handy and has a featurerich software .Beware there are china clones of this unit may be at 60% of the cost. There may be multiple issues with
risetime falltime as well as cross talk / delay in display , specially the durability of the unit.
The LA1034 LOGICPORT sells about 389$ and has 34(!) channel with CAN, I2C, SPI and RS232 Interpreters and frequency counter. The standard IDC header is handy and installation is very simple.

The cheapest and slowest one here http://www.xs4all.nl/~jwasys/old/diy2.html
Just uses the parallel port as input interface , use the buffered version..(almost passive) this is helpful for
learning with slow signals .. run the digitrac.exe enjoy...
